The Friends of the Lowell-Dracut-Tyngsboro State Forest
was formed in1998 and officially incorporated in April of 2004 to create a greater awareness of the environmental
resources of the 1,100 acre State Park which encompasses the three communities. The mission of the Friends is to promote responsible
conservation of the Forest by encouraging public access and understanding of the forest habitat, and its invaluable historic
and ecological significance to the surrounding area. The Friends group is an alliance of several organizations which have
representation on the board of directors and include the Greater Lowell Indian Cultural Association, the Pawtucketville Citizens
Council and the New England Mountain Bike Association. The Friends have a number of projects and programs underway and during
the year we usually run three walking tours, a snowshoe outing, continued education for Forest users to limit illegal motorized
vehicle usage and increase wetlands awareness. We also coordinate at least four cleanup days with the Department of Conservation
and Recreation and work with them towards the addition of new trail signage. The group also recently accomplished the creation
of a new trail guide with historical and environmental information. To receive a free trail guide in the mail please contact

The Friends meet monthly through most of the year at Lowell General Hospital on the fourth Thursday of
month (2008). Check the Calendar of events for details. |
